I do not and will not ever use generative AI in any portion of my creative process.
Creativity exists inherently for us to communicate our lived experiences, dreams, fears, emotions, and inspirations to others. In other words: It allows us to share our humanness with other humans. To express ourselves. To explore our insights on life. To make incomprehensible connections with people whom we will never meet. Art impacts people, and we discover more about who we are along our creative journeys.
AI can do none of that. It can only regurgitate.
As it pertains to my writing, em dashes and Oxford commas have existed for hundreds of years, and are only so prevalent in AI-generated content because LLMs are trained on the [stolen, unethically sourced] works of countless human authors. They are not smoking guns of AI use. I will not sacrifice my style or my voice to cater to AI or to avoid allegations, and neither should you.
Art is for humans. Encourage human artists.
We don’t need creatives shying away from creating due to the fear of AI witch-hunting; We need humans spurring each other on and supporting each other’s work. We need more human art, now more than ever.
As always, keep looking up, keep moving forward, and keep creating.
